Mystery in Cheju Island, or simply called as Island, is written by YOUN IN WAN and illustrated by YANG KYUNG IL. The comic has 7 volumes altogether.
Cheju Island, whic is located in south area of Korea, is well known not only as a tourism destination but also as a place where many kinds of evil gather.
Won Mi Ho, a spoiled rich girl, came to the island to be a high school teacher. Not long after she arrived there, she figured out that the driver who's in charge of picking her up was actually a monster called JEONG YEOM KYI.
A mysterious man named Ban came out of nowhere when the monster was about to kill her. However, Ban's coming was not for rescuing her but for avenging Jeong Yeom Kyi. Apparently the monster had killed the woman Ban chose as his next victim. With an ancient dagger and spell, Ban destroyed it.
At that time Cheju Island was terrorized by some gruesome murders and from what she heard during Ban's quarrel with the monster, Mi Ho strongly suspected him as the psycho behind those murders. Even though his true identity had been revealed, Ban didn't kill Mi Ho because she would die soon, anyway. The Jeong Yeom Kyi had put mark on her and that meant other Jeong Yeom Kyi was going to come after her. They wouldn't stop until she died. Mi Ho then offered a crazy deal to Ban; she would pay him to hunt all the monsters down. He accepted the deal with one condition; 10 million for every Jeong Yeom Kyi he could kill for her.
Mi Ho continued being involved in some horrible incidents with different kind of dark creatures. A female student of hers made a dangerous deal with demon called BENJULRE after she had been raped by her internet friend, werewolves kidnapped Mi Ho's friend and her husband during their honeymoon and a little girl who was possessed by SEO KYI JIN BYON IN TAE. To cure the little girl, Mi Ho had to contact a young exorcist named Yohan in U.S. because dealing with unshaped demons wasn't Ban's specialty.
The comic is ended with a controversial story about the skulls of Korean people who became war prisoner of Japanese army (they became experimental objects, as well) during World War II which seeked revenge.
I think the most interesting character in the comic is Ban; cold and mysterious and yet, attractive. Even after finished reading it, I'm still curious about who is Ban really, what is he (because in the 7th volume it's said that he's not actually a living person) and what his reasons to be a serial killer.
Btw, for those who really like suspense and horror story, I think this comic is worth reading. The illustrations are gruesome and violent but awesome in the same time. As for the story, I can guarantee you it's not the cheap one.
