Fate can't be changed
Is that so?
As long as you don't give up, there's always hope
Spiral, Suiri no Kizuna (some translations for it are Line of Reasoning, Bond of Inference, Melody of Logic) starts with Narumi Ayumu receiving a phone call from her big bro, Kiyotaka, whose is a detective. Kiyotaka said that he won't be back until he discovered the truth about Blade Children. Ayumu didn't understand what he said, nor he knew what is Blade Children. 2 years later, Ayumu became to know what Blade Children is and be involved with those children said to be 'cursed'.
Ayumu was going back from the school roof where he slept during break, when he heard scream. He went to look from where the scream came and found that a girl had fallen coz the security fence was loosened. Being in the crime scene, Ayumu then became a suspect. His sister in law, a policewoman, Madoka, was in charge of the investigation. The victim, Shiragatani Sayoko, was spared from death coz there's a truck parked beneath that cushioned her fall. This case brought Ayumu to get to know a talkative newspaper girl, Yuizaki Hiyono, whose specialty is in collecting information about anything and anyone.
Ayumu then proved that he not guilty and even found out the real culprit, it's the new teacher there, Sonobe. When he's asked why he wanted to kill Sayoko, he said that she deserves to die, because she's Blade Children. Sonobe tried to escape the police but someone got to him first. Yet, he could be saved. But then he was pushed down from hospital window later on.
One by one, the ones called Blade Children appeared before Ayumu. Eyes Rutherford (a well-known pianist), Azasuki Kousuke (naughty red-haired boy) andTakeuchi Rio (petite harmless looking girl who misleads people) . They seem to test Ayumu for something. They challenged Ayumu in many games that involved not only good reasoning but also self confidence. The reason why they have interest on Ayumu is coz of Kiyotaka's words, that Ayumu is the key to their salvation. So, they wanna know if that's true by testing him.
Happiness of the believer
Ayumu himself actually not much of a boy of confidence. Living under his perfect big bro's shadow, makes him question his own talent and ability. "I can't be like my brother," he said. Of course, nobody wants him to be his brother. He is what he is. But he can't see the fact, though hates being always compared to Kiyotaka, he can't help himself comparing either. What Ayumu doesn't know, Kiyotaka actually has realized that Ayumu is living under his shadows all this time. For Ayumu, there're 2 paths for him to choose, whether stay living in shadow and miserable or break free and be more than what Kiyotaka is and reach the place that even 'the perfect' Kiyotaka can't go.
But a loser can turn to be a hero when he finds someone who always believes in him even though he doubts himself. Hiyono never questions Ayumu's talent and ability. That's why she dares to risk her life, grabbing the heat-cencored pole to give more time to Ayumu so that he can find answer to the riddle to disarm the bomb. As fool as it might seem, but she does that coz she believes that Ayumu can disarm the bomb. And when Ayumu flickers and drops on his knees, defeated by Rio's bluff about there's strychnine in one of the glasses they drink, Hiyono takes his glass and drinks the water coz she believes that Ayumu's deduction that neither of the glass have strychnine is correct. And it's Hiyono too who makes a chance for Ayumu to do rematch against Rio and thus gaining back his strength after being defeated.
And among Blade Children themselves, there are pro and kontra about salvation Kiyotaka mentioned to them. There's who believes that Ayumu can help them, there's who wants to believe but still somehow doubt and there's who is pessimistic, thinking that they won't be saved no matter how. And actually what makes these kids called Blade Children and why it's said they're cursed. Nothing much can be got from the anime, though (don't know about the manga coz only can find the manga until episode 2 here and the translation not good) but what makes them Blade Children is that they minus a rib at their right side chest. I don't understand why just missing a rib makes them cursed ones, said they're coming from darkness and thus should be eliminated. If they're not meant to be born, why they're born? The fact is they're really born, so how can they're not meant to be born? And if they kill in order not to get kill, it's not really their fault coz they're just surviving. It's the fault of those 'pure' people who hunt them down, that making these children have to kill. I can say that it's actually those hunters who make Blade Children as if 'cursed' or come from darkness.
And it's too bad that Eyes's childhood friend, Kanone, who is pessimistic, cooperate with the hunters to kill his fellow Blade Children. If he can't believe in such thing called salvation or changing the fate, then it's his own problem, but why he has to kill those tiny lights of hope others have? He just makes himself even more degraded than the hunters.
