For me, true love is loving someone and when that someone dies in one raining day hit by a car, standing there everyday to control traffic and in raining days crying over the memory. That's the kind of love I want - love that transcendences death
Mina is a girl who is born with deformed left hand ... only has three fingers. And as if it's not misfortune enough, her body weak too, she has some diseases which are incurable. Since she's born and growing, she spent time at hospital, taking medicines, surgeries. Until finally docs say that no hope for her. So her mother brings her out of hospital so that she can live normal life for as long as time given for her. Everyday she still must take drugs, of course. If there's one thing she likes very much is watching ballet. She has tapes of ballet performances and wants to go to Europe someday to see live ballet performances.
People are scared of her deformed left hand so she always wears glove to cover it. She's alone, don't have friends at school, partly because she spends so many years in hospital, alien to normal friendship thing. Of course she wants to have friends but unfortunately other girls avoiding her, thinking of her as a weird person thus treating her as an outcast.
In front of her school, there's a guy named Ki-Su who always standing in the middle of highway everyday, controlling traffic for student to cross safely. Rumor spread in the school says that he once had the girl he loved in the school but upon meeting for their date, she was hit by a car in one raining day. Since then he always control traffic there no matter sunny or rainy. Teachers and students may think that the story is funny or strange, maybe stupid too, but not Mina. She finds it interesting, amusing.
One day a guy comes to move in downstairs, below her apartment. The guy is a photographer named Yeong-Jae. On one night, he throws away garbage and happens to look up and see her leaning against her window, listening to music in her headphone and smoking. He then asks her for cigarette. She throws cigarette pack down to him. He asks for lighter too. She hesitates for a while - he assures her that he will give it back to her after lighting cigarette - then throws the lighter to him. But he doesn't give back the lighter to her right away, just relaxly walks back into his own apartment. The lighter is meant for her coz it actually belongs to her passed-away father.
Other day when she is walking home from bookstore, he catches up with her. She asks for the lighter. He then gives her lollipop as the exchange for the lighter, saying that she better not smoke, just eat the lollipop. She doesn't wanna accept the lollipop. He forces her to, taking her left hand from her trousers pocket and accidentally sees her deformed hand. She draws her hand fast and runs home.
Yeong-Jae somehow isn't bothered with what he has seen, keep wanting to talk to her. One night he throws to her window coz she always avoids seeing or talking to him. A night watcher catches him in the act and gets suspicious of him. He then says that there's a rat on window sill and rushes back to his apartment. The other day he leaves a box in front of her apartment door. The box consists a turtle and a note saying that the turtle can't live without its friend/spouse. So if she doesn't wanna see the turtle die, she must want to see him and bring the turtle too coz the other turtle is with him.
So she comes to his apartment downstairs. But she doesn't bring the turtle along with her. She just wants to ask for the lighter. He then looks everywhere for it in his apartment, turning everything upside down but can't find it. So finally he gives her the other turtle as a hostage, until he gives her back the lighter. The he asks for her hp number and writes it on the floor, saying that on TV, it can be erased easily. But when he tries to erase it, it can't be erased. So then they ask the cleaning lady working at Mina's house to help erasing it. When seeing the number, the cleaning lady realizes that it's Mina's hp number. She asks him whether he tries to seduce the girl. He argues that he just wants to photograph her not seduce her.
What brings them closer later is when riding on bus, Yeong-Jae loses his balance as the bus moving and his ice cream dirties a woman's blouse. The woman gets angry and he just smiles apologetically goofily, trying to say sorry but the woman still glares at him. Unexpectedly, Mina uses her glove to wipe ice cream off the woman's blouse and says sorry. The woman then agrees to drop it off. Both of them sit on the back of the bus and Yeong-Jae takes Mina's left hand, takes off her wet gloves and rubs her hand warm. Mina is surprised but she doesn't draw her hand coz the way he holds her hand - he makes it so that people on the bus can't see that her hand is actually deformed. And when they realize that people on bus watching them, he pretends to shoot them with Mina's finger shotgun. For the first time he sees her laughing.
One day he takes her to ballet course place, the reason is he wants to photograph ballerinas there. He asks one of the ballerinas to lend her toe shoes and maybe teach her a bit about ballet. Yeong-Jae secretly takes picture of Mina wearing toe shoes with the help of the ballerina. The ballerina is nice, teaching her the basic movements and when about to teach her how to stand on her toes and Mina is slipping, the ballerina says it's better she takes off her glove coz it's slippery against the bar. Heavily and uncomfortably, Mina takes off her glove and when the ballerina sees her left hand, she is suprised but says nothing and not avoiding her, still treating her nice. But suddenly Mina feels her head spinning around and shortly she collapses onto floor, fainted.
When she awakes, she's already in her room with her mother and doc on her side. The doc gives her IV drip to supply her with liquid and vitamins. After resting the whole day, she feels well and goes out at night, sitting on a swing with her mother. She says that she never imagines that ballet is such a hard work. Her mother says that's why she doesn't send Mina to ballet course because she thinks it'll be too heavy for her. Then her mother says maybe they should go to Europe to see live ballet performance. But Mina has changed her mind, she doesn't wanna go to Europe anymore. She looked pictures taken by Yeong-Jae in Hawaii - among them is picture of sea turtles, hearing him saying that Hawaii is beautiful and she wants to go there now. The mom agrees, after all going to Hawaii is cheaper than going to Europe. Mina then suggests that they shouldn't go just by themselves. Better take someone as photographer, guide and carrier guy. Her mother asks whether she has someone in her mind. Mina answers yes. So they asks Yeong-Jae to come along with them to Hawaii.
