Ahh.....just been to see The King and the Clown. Wanted to see exactly what it was about since the review said it was tragedy, and wanted to see what Lee Joon-Ki was about. Hahaha....So, expected it to be sad/tragic with some death and sex thrown in. But was surprised
The poster doesn’t do Gong-gil (Lee Joon-Ki) any justice. He looks far better in the movie than in the poster. First time he appeared on screen was, “Whoooa....She's (I mean, He's) beautiful. More beautiful than any woman.” It was simply amazing. My jaw dropped mentally. Playing his part in the troupe, he was everything perfect. Naughty, playful, cute, seductive every time he spoke and gyrated his slim, sexy body. Whooa.....his fair, lovely waist and stomach, curvy hips, eloquent eyes and sexy smile....Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. It was unbelievable watching him. Except for his Adam’s apple, masculine voice and flat chest, how could such a lovely, sexy vision be a man??
When he rode a horse, he was completely magnificent, a bishonen (beautiful boy) right out of an anime or manga/manwha. No wonder the girls love him.
His eyes are unfortunately single-lidded and slanted (ok, almond-shaped), and so are rather small. But alone with his tough-talking and gutsy partner, his eyes reflect a lovely sadness. With his rosebud lips that seldom speak, his face has a truly unspoken, sad beauty. If only to kiss those lips.....
But unfortunately, beautiful is all he is. He can neither fight nor speak his mind. Racked by indecision and tortured by his own cowardice, he is quite frankly, worse than a girl. If he has the guts to slit his wrist, why not have the guts to rescue his partner out of jail? Did he, irresponsible fool, not consider what would happen to his blinded partner (whose blindness he might’ve prevented had he been less helpless) if he died?
Why not at least use his charms to seduce the insane King (Jung Jin-Young) into releasing his beloved partner? Why only cry?? What can tears do when action would’ve been better? After all, he’s already prepared to die and his partner is of the same mind. Might as well plan a rescue, rope in some help from the other guys if it can’t be done alone, and escape together. King be damned.
And if they died in the attempt, that would’ve indeed been a tragedy. At least they tried. The tragedy is in the trying and fighting and yet failing, not inaction and tears. Ahh...it’s frustrating to see a helpless person, man or woman, whatever the century. It’s just not cool. I feel like shaking Gong-gil to his senses. Or giving him a punch or giving him a punching bag to punch!! Do something Gong-gil!!! So many choices....a) kill the King (almost did) b) drug the King c) whack the King, then tie, gag and stuff him somewhere....Pick one or all three!!
On the other hand, Jang-Seng (Kam Woo-Sung), Gong-gil’s strong-minded and rugged partner, is cool, decisive, calm, jokes even in the face of death---a good fearless man against Gong-gil’s girlish uncertainty. He says what he thinks, does what he says and fights for what he wants (even if he can’t fight well, unfortunately). “Some things you can’t sell.” he tells Gong-gil as the latter is ordered off yet again to serve a customer by the troupe’s pimp boss. How true. For food or cash, some things just can’t be sold. The way Jang-Seng fought to keep Gong-gil from going is moving. Great to see him ruin the customer’s fun too Bravo
What is true and clear is that Jang-Seng loves Gong-gil, even if no love words are spoken between them. No words are necessary. Never once does he take advantage of Gong-gil’s love for him, not even when they sleep beside each other. Nothing shows this more clearly than when Jang-Seng pulls up the blanket for Gong-gil one night, just when it seems as if he might have sex on his mind as he turns to the sleeping form of his partner. Gong-gil, on his part, wasn’t really asleep and what he feels as he opens his eyes in the darkness, one can only guess.
By the way Jang-Seng fought to take the blame for a crime they didn’t commit against the King, what more need be said of his love?
It is also true and clear that Gong-gil loves Jang-Seng, for nothing makes him smile or his eyes light up as beautifully as when they are together. Perhaps, Gong-gil simply loves in his own way. Despite his helplessness, he did take a man’s life to save Jang-Seng.
In the end, theirs is a love that transcends the body, that defies even death. Such a love is what is true and beautiful. Makes life worth living and gives the world its meaning.
It’s hard not to see some Brokeback Mountain in The King and the Clown. Hard not to draw parallels between Ennis and Gong-gil, Jack and Jang-Seng. In love, being weak is not a good thing, whether it’s 1504 Korea or 1960s cowboy America. Not only does the person suffer, he causes his loved one(s) to suffer as well. Unnecessary and unfair to the lover who is strong in faith and courage. Why then do Jack and Jang-Seng love the men they love?
Love chooses its lovers and not the other way around, if only to prove that it is free?
Incidentally, there is no sex in the entire movie
And seems there's no good English site dedicated to it, even though there're lots of reviews. The only good site with loads of pics is a Chinese one where the pics can't even be clicked.
