For those who like fantasy, Neil Gaiman's Mirrormask is one very good movie. Neil Gaiman should be no stranger to those familiar with The Sandman universe of graphic novels, and in Mirrormask, one almost get the feeling that the graphic universe of Neil Gaiman has come to life under the amazing direction of Dave McKean. For those not familiar, try to imagine a Salvador Dali painting come to life... it will roughly prepare you for the visual effects of Mirrormask.
Plotwise, the story is very simple. Helena, a circus girl spends much of her free time drawing, the result of which is a complete universe plastered over her bedroom wall. She yearns to escape the circus life and live a "real" life, but the sudden collapse of her mother caused her to be thrust into the alternate reality existing in the universe upon her wall. In that universe, real life is played out symbolically in the coma of the Queen of Light, and the Queen of Shadow is now enroaching across the entire kingdom. The whole series of events was precipated by the escape of the daughter of the Queen of Shadow, a anti-Helena who swopped places with the real Helena with the help of the Mirrormask, such that Helena is trapped in the alternate universe while anti-Helena go out and wreck her real life. Of course, Helena then sets out to recover the Mirrormask and attempts to heal the ills in this alternate world in an effort to right the wrongs in her own.
For those interested, it's only showing in a limited run at Plaza Sing and GV Tampines...
