What if you can kill people without having your own hands dirty or even being there to do the killing?
This awesome manga is written by OOBA TSUGUMI and illustrated by OBATA TAKESHI who also did the illustration for Hikaru no Go. It's quite new too because it's first published in Japan in 2004.
The story began with a situation in Shinigami world where gods of death were bored. So bored they just played skeleton gamble to pass the time. However, one god of death named Ryuuku, decided to do something that could turn out to be quite interesting. He threw Death Note he owned to human world.
The thrown away Death Note was found by a 17-year-old high school student named Yagami Raito. A very smart boy - always got highest grades at school and had a flawless attitude - who were also bored with his life.
Curious, he brought the Death Note home with him and read some instructions written in it. It's stated that if he wrote down a person's name on Death Note, that particular person would die. But he must have the person's face in his mind also, otherwise the death wouldn't take place.
First, Raito thought the book was only somekind of sick joke. But he wanted to prove it, just the same. When he was wondering who'd be his ginnypig (should be someone who had nothing to do with him), a news on TV about a murderer - who had killed and injured 6 people on Shinjuku the other day - holding hostage of 6 children and social worker suddenly caught his attention. Otoharada Kurou was picked to be Raito's first victim. He wrote the name down, picturing the face in his mind, and 40 seconds later Otoharada was dead. Since Raito didn't specify the cause of death, the murderer died of a heart attack.
The second victim was a punk biker whom Raito happened to see harrashing a girl in front of a shop. He also overheard the biker's friends called his name; Shibuimaru Takuo. Raito then entered the shop and calmly wrote Takuo's name in Death Note. This time he specified the cause of death; traffic accident - crushed by a huge truck, to be exact. And it happened just the way he wanted - Takuo was crushed to death by a huge truck in front of his eyes.
The fifth day after finding Death Note, Ryuuku - the original owner of Death Note - paid Raito a visit. Ryuuku came not to take Raito's life or something but it's because of the rule saying that human who got Death Note was bound to god of death until he/she died.
Within five days Raito had killed many people in many places and countries. All of his victims were criminals. Secretly, he had strong obsession to clean up the world from criminals and create a new world where crime didn't exist.
The curious death of many criminals - because of heart attacks - worldwide in short time drew ICPO (International Crime Police Organization)'s attention. Thety suspected there's someone who killed those criminals - someone who's called 'KIRA' (killer) by press and society - though they had no idea how this Kira could do his killings in different places at almost the same time.
To investigate furthermore about Kira, ICPO asked help from a mysterious private investigator known only as 'L'. No one had ever seen L's face or known his real name and whereabouts. L only made contact with police through his trusted man (mysterious also) named Watari.
L, however, had had a theory that whoever Kira was, he must be in Japan, particularly in Kanto area. This theory was based on Kira's first victim who was a murderer in Shinjuku. To prove it, L challenged Kira using a news report which was broadcasted in Kanto area.
Raito, who also watched the news, acted like L's plan - trying to kill him at the very moment. But the figure and name shown on TV wasn't the real L - it was someone else; a criminal Raito didn't know. This thing made L even more convinced that Kira couldn't kill unless he knew his victim's real name and face. Feeling despised, Raito answered the challenge by killing more criminals and making them leave messages for L.
And that's when the cat-and-dog chase between Raito and L (known later as Ryuuzaki) started.
All you need is a person's name and face and... a Death Note
Reading this manga is very exciting. Both Raito (Kira) and Ryuuzaki (L) are genius and they can't take defeat as result. So they always try to be one step ahead of the other because whoever loses in this game, he surely dies.
Raito is very cool and calm, even when he's under a dangerous situation where he could be suspected as Kira, he still can think and act reasonably. And he's, somewhat, cruel too. He realises very well that he must kill everyone who stands in his path and he doesn't hesitate in doing it. He even prepares to kill his own family one day if it's necessary (ironic thing is Raito's father - Yagami Souichirou - is a detective director of Japanese Police Force who investigates Kira). And with his daring strategy, Raito has managed to kill 12 FBI agents sent to Japan to chase Kira.
While Ryuuzaki is a person whom we may addressed as 'weird' if we see him. There's no physical proof that he's a brilliant private investigator. He even has a face like a junkie - pale with dilated unfocused-liked eyes. But behind his shabby appearance there's a magnificent brain which can level Raito's. It seems that Ryuuzaki can follow Raito's way of thinking and never falls for his traps.
And, there's Ryuuku - the god of death - who has thrown Death Note to human world and started the whole thing. Just like any other dark creature, Ryuuku is malicious and wicked. Surely there's another hidden purpose why he throws Death Note in the first place, instead of just to have fun. In fact, actually Ryuuku throws two books - one is Death Note and the other one is ... ??
I have in my hands the means and in my heart, the will
